Frequently Asked Questions

(There will be lots more not shown here so just book a consultation so I can help answer them.)

We want our wedding, our way but there must be things we can't do?

  • The short response is not really - if you want something special, I'll always try to include it! The freedom that comes with a celebrant-led wedding is as far as your imagination, health, safety and your venue will allow most often. I have included dogs, warmed rings, included children and family members in the ceremony, lit candles, shared flowers, included music, discussed a wide range of rituals and tweaked traditions so that they are personalised to the couple....book a consultation, I love creativity so let's talk!

So we can get married anywhere?

  • Anywhere! (You just have to get the permission of the owner). You can have a service in your back garden, at a village hall, in a field or halfway up a mountain if you would like and can get the correct permissions. How about that special place you first met or where you proposed…  all these are possible with a celebrant-led wedding, as YOU have the choice. Choose a location that is special to you and has the space that you want. I'm happy to help and would love to share your special space on your special day. Celebrant-led weddings allow for freethinking and creativity. I'm happy to travel far and wide in the UK and abroad if required (fees applicable of course).

But is a celebrant-led wedding legal?

  • No, but they are beautiful, personalised and unique! You must get a statutory ceremony (often known as a '2+2 ceremony') at a registry office and performed by a registrar for your marriage to be legally binding. All registration districts in England must offer statutory ceremonies so contact your local area via email or ring them to get details. These are short ceremonies and very affordable. You can simply do exactly as the name suggests and go together with two witnesses and get married. Celebrant-led services are ceremonial, and not legal at this time. Most couples usually choose to get married before their celebrant-led services but this is up to the couple.

So what about life celebrations or funerals, are these legal if led by a celebrant?

  • Funerals don't hold a legal status, unlike weddings. This means anyone can lead a funeral ceremony. Whilst this could be a close friend or family member, I know that in such an emotionally challenging time most families choose to have an officiant who helps manage the whole ceremony, writes it with the family and oversees things on the day. I work with other people you may wish to be involved such as funeral directors or friends and family. You can request me directly with your funeral director. At Marking Moments I celebrate life and aim to ensure that whilst we may share a few tears we share laughter and smiles too. Funerals can follow whatever format a family wishes. There are so many options to celebrate a life.

We want a private service but would like to hold a 'life celebration' in a few weeks, is this possible?

  • If you wish to hold a life celebration event after a small private funeral I can plan, write and oversee that at a venue of your choice. I can lead the service on the day of the funeral and then return to lead the life celebration too if you would like that continuity. Just like celebrant-led weddings, life celebrations can take place wherever you would like and in a way that reflects the person whom we are celebrating. Together we can plan a truly memorable event.
